TR-8S Creative Control
Level 2 — Performance and Advanced Programming
Go beyond the basics: Scatter performance across all 10 types and depths, Motion Sequencing for parameter automation, Sub Steps for 32nd-note detail, per-step probability for generative patterns, and polyrhythmic programming using per-channel step counts. This is where the TR-8S stops being a drum machine and starts being a performance instrument.
The tools that separate TR-8S users from TR-8S performers.
Twelve sessions cover: the complete Scatter system (all 10 types, all 10 depths, per-step assignment, and the Fill vs. Scatter vs. Roll three-category system), Motion Sequencing for automated parameter changes within a pattern, Sub Steps for 32nd and 64th note resolution, per-step probability and Condition settings, Variation-based song arrangement, and polyrhythmic pattern construction using per-channel step length settings.
By Session 12 you have a complete live performance set using the Variation and Scatter system, a library of polyrhythmic patterns, and full command of the Motion Sequencer — the tools that define the TR-8S as a creative instrument rather than a playback device.
The bridge from competent to creative.
Level 2 assumes you can build and save patterns from Level 1. The focus here is on the tools the TR-8S has that no other drum machine offers in the same form: Scatter, Motion Sequencing, and the probability system that makes patterns evolve rather than repeat.
Completing Level 2 unlocks Level 3 Professional — studio integration at the individual channel level, USB multitrack recording, and the revenue application of TR-8S as hardware infrastructure for professional production work.
12 Sessions — TR-8S Creative Control
Session 1
Scatter introduction — what it is, how the type and depth controls interact, and the basic performance workflow.
Session 2
Scatter types 1–5 in depth: Roll, Gate, Reverse, Shift, and Pitch Scatter — programming and performance applications.
Session 3
Scatter types 6–10: the second bank of Scatter modes and when to use each in a live set.
Session 4
Per-step Scatter assignment — programming individual steps with different Scatter types and depths.
Session 5
Fill, Scatter, and Roll categories — the three-button system for live pattern manipulation and when each applies.
Session 6
Motion Sequencing — recording and editing parameter automation inside a TR-8S pattern.
Session 7
Sub Steps — using 32nd and 64th note resolution for hi-hat rolls, ghost notes, and detailed percussion.
Session 8
Per-step probability — setting step trigger percentages to create evolving, non-repeating patterns.
Session 9
Step Condition — combining probability with conditional logic for pattern variation without Song Mode.
Session 10
Polyrhythmic programming — setting independent step counts per channel to create cross-rhythm patterns.
Session 11
Variation system deep dive — building a complete song arrangement using Variations A through H.
Session 12
Capstone — a complete live performance set combining Scatter, Motion, probability, and Variations.
The tools that make the TR-8S worth every dollar.
Scatter alone separates the TR-8S from every other drum machine in Roland's lineup. Creative Control is 12 sessions dedicated to the features that make live TR-8S performance distinctively different — the kind of control that gets noticed in a set. If you completed Foundations and want to use the machine at its full creative potential, this is the next step.
